Training

The Climb to Fight Breast Cancer® is a physically demanding event, requiring solid muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance. Sound physical fitness is the single most important aspect in the success of your climb.

Mountain climbing is a team effort where individuals rely on teammates for their safety and assistance. Strong individuals create an even stronger team. Your guide services have developed physical training and conditioning recommendations for each of the climbs.

Upon registration for the Climb to Fight Breast Cancer, participants will receive a packet of suggested training hikes prepared by Alpine Ascents International (AAI) or Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R). However, each climber is personally responsible for making sure he/she trains appropriately. Climb to Fight Breast Cancer participant questions regarding physical conditioning and preparation for the summit attempt should be directed to the respective guide service, which can assist in planning your physical preparation. Please note, AAI, PP&R and their guides retain the right, at any point, to determine whether a climber is sufficiently fit to participate in the climb.

Fund-raising

Over the last 11 years, the Climb to Fight Breast Cancer has generated more than $3.5 million dollars for breast cancer research at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. This would not have been possible without the outstanding support of the climb participants and their generous donors. Each climber must actively participate in fundraising for the event. Basic fund-raising support will be provided. Each climber will be personally responsible for generating the following fund-raising minimums:

Mt Adams — $3,000 USD
Mt Baker — $3,000 USD
Mt Elbrus — $10,000 USD
Mt Hood — $3,000 USD
Mt Kilimanjaro — $10,000 USD
Mt Rainier — $5,000 USD
Volcanoes of Mexico — $7,500 USD

Please make note of the following fund-raising deadlines:

  1. At the time of registration, all climbers will be required to provide a credit card number that guarantees commitment to the fund-raising minimum. A $200 USD ($500 USD for Elbrus, Kilimanjaro and Volcanoes of Mexico) registration fee will be applied toward the fund-raising minimum.

  2. Half of the fund-raising minimum must be raised by the mid-point. Any climbers who have not raised half of their fund-raising minimum by the mid-point will have two options:

  3. Fund-raising minimums are due by the fund-raising deadline. Participants whose fund-raising minimums are not received by this date will have the balance due placed on a credit card. Should the climber continue to raise funds and surpass the minimum, their credit card can be refunded for the amount raised in excess of fund-raising minimum. A refund schedule is included in the registration climber packet.
